Foursquare is one of the newer location based social networks and is apparently one of the fastest growing. In fact they are now gaining almost 100,000 new users every week and have had to take over the entire second floor of the building they have their office in it according to the article "Foursquare Expands Offices - I wonder What They're Paying For It?". But with Microsoft eying the company, they may not be around long as an independent company as many project that it will be a very successful social networking site. However, it does not appear that they are profitable yet. First, they have to focus on raising more investment capital, but they can’t count on any investments from me in the near future.
Why am I skeptical of Foursquare? One of the main selling points of Foursquare in the past has been that it is accessible on cellphones. Obviously, that is hardly an ace in the hole for any company right now as mobile networks have extended to just about every web application including every social network from Facebook to LinkedIn. I am wondering what Foursquare is going to offer next in order to maintain their competitive advantage, before that everyone can withhold their reservations about Foursquare becoming the next Twitter.
